<image:caption>Demonstrated Interest has become an important factor in College Admissions, and is quite literally a way for you to quite literally, ‘demonstrate your interest’ in a particular college or university. Schools are interested in tracking your engagement because they want to admit students who understand who they are as a school and are most likely to attend if offered a spot in the upcoming class. Engaging with a school and demonstrating interest benefits you by: 1) Learning about the School: When you engage with a school by attending virtual information sessions, tours and student panels, visiting campus, and reading communications that are sent to you, you are learning more in-depth information about a school that will help you determine if the school is truly a ‘match’ or ‘fit’. 2) The more you learn about what is unique about a school the more likely you are to write a meaningful supplemental essay that stands out to the question, “Why this University?”. You are also more likely to communicate your specific interest in an institution and why you are a match during your College Interview.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We are pleased to announce that Minelle Sarfu-Adu is a 2022 Women Thriving Scholarship recipient. Minelle has already made a positive impact in her community as a youth activist. As a first-generation student whose family is originally from Ghana, Minelle brings a valuable perspective to our local community. Minelle pursued a project-based learning path at South Burlington High School through the Big Picture program, which gave her a springboard to extend her work beyond the classroom and into the community. During the 2020-2021 academic year Minelle completed an exemplary independent project on fair housing policies, redlining, and housing discrimination, which earned her the Outstanding Service Thesis project award. Recognizing the importance of furthering knowledge among her peers and educators on these topics, she co-created a curriculum for other high schools that she rolled out through the Vermont Anti-Racism Network, the Big Bang Conference, and other national forums. Minelle also advocated for and became the first student member of the South Burlington City Council. She then presented her work there and to the Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity (CVOEO). Minelle’s inspiring passion and enthusiasm extends beyond her work as a youth activist, she is also a humble, but competitive decathlete, and a six time track and field state champion! Minelle will be attending Antioch University in the fall majoring in Business, while also working to get her real estate license. Thrive’s ‘Women Thriving’ Scholarship was created to provide the foundation for increasing representation in leadership based on the belief that more diverse leadership representation improves our communities. Scholarship recipients are selected based on their leadership promise. Minelle exemplifies what it means to be a youth leader and has already created positive change. Congratulations and thank you Minelle for your contributions! We know you will continue to bring more equity, inclusivity, and positive change to our community.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Common App is now officially open for seniors. This is a great time to become familiar with the application and what you will need to provide to complete your applications for college. If you have finalized your college list, you can begin loading your schools into the Common App by using the “College Search” tab. It is helpful to only add schools that you know you are definitely going to apply to in the fall. You can begin to look at application requirements, deadlines, supplemental essay requirements (which schools can add under both supplementals or college questions), and other information required for each school. You can start with the easy sections of the application by entering your biographical and general information. We will be posting tips on the specific sections of the application in the weeks ahead, but this is a great time to get started and become familiar with the application.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Summer is a great time to develop your activity list for the Common App activities section. How you showcase your activities and skills developed can make a difference in your application. Start by developing a list of your activities. Note what role you played, the name of the organization, and time spent in the activity. Begin to think about how you can highlight your contribution or impact and the skills you developed in the activity description of 150 characters or less per activity (Common App limit). You have the opportunity to showcase 10 of the activities you participated in during high school. This is a great way for the Admissions team to learn more about you and what you are likely to contribute as part of your future college community.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A critical piece of your college application is the main essay portion of The Common Application. The Common App provides you with 7 different prompts that you can choose from to write your college essay. When selecting a prompt, it’s important to think about the purpose of an admissions essay. The essay is one piece of the application where admissions readers can get to know you beyond your academic program, grades, test scores, and activity lists. They see it as an opportunity to learn more about you, what motivates you, and what you will bring to their campus community. Here are some things to think about when writing your college admissions essay: -Try to use an ‘additive’ approach when writing your essays by asking yourself, “What would I like the Admissions Reader to know about me that they might not already know from other parts of my application?” -Reflect on the prompts and select one that truly resonates with you and that showcases the strengths or qualities that you would bring to your future campus. -Your essay will be read with the prompt you select in mind, so make sure to address all sections of the prompt/question. -Ask yourself if there is a clear theme in your essay? The main essay is 650 words long, so it is important that you keep your essay focused and develop a strong theme that holds your essay together and clearly reflects the question(s) asked in the prompt. -Avoid trying to do too much in your essay. Essays work best when they are in your authentic voice, answer the prompt, and tell a story about you that allows the reader to get a peek into learning more about who you are as a person. Stay tuned for more Common App essay tips! For this week, try to find the best prompt for you, brainstorm your ideas, and begin drafting your essay.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Thrive Educational Advising Group's leadership scholarship, Women Thriving, focuses on representation and issues of equity and access in leadership. The scholarship seeks diverse young women who have demonstrated leadership potential in their academics, extracurricular activities, or work in the community. Consistent with our mission to mentor, guide, and offer educational assistance, we seek to identify future women leaders who are interested in empowering other young women, improving diversity in leadership, and inspiring positive change in their communities. The Women Thriving scholarship is a cooperative effort with the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation (VSAC). Please visit their website for more information on how to apply for Thrive's scholarship as well as many others. The scholarship descriptions and due dates will be available in October on the VSAC website (https://www.vsac.org/pay/student-aid-options/scholarships). <image:caption>The Common App Prompts for 2021-2022 are as follows: 1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story. 2. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience? 3. Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome? 4. Reflect on something that someone has done for you that has made you happy or thankful in a surprising way. How has this gratitude affected or motivated you? 5. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others. 6. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more? 7. Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.</image:caption>
